Van Puijenbroek: 'Go through the summer without mastitis, it's possible!'

Ron van Puijenbroek milked healthy during the past summer months without mastitis. Maintaining
resistance is proving to be a successful strategy...

Resistance up to standard

Everything starts with a good immune resistance, says Ron. If you know that the resistance is up to
standard, you can enjoy milking with peace of mind. I just want to milk healthy cows milk all cows
easily and quickly with lower somatic cell counts and mastitis. In this way I have enough time for
other activities on or outside the farm and my cows can age more healthily, Ron continues. He
therefore wants to increase the lifetime production at discharge from 43,000 to 50,000 kg of milk
within two years.

Change of strategy

We milked less hard last year, compared to previous years. We come from a production of more
than 37 kg per day and have tried to increase the balance with less costs. Production has decreased slightly due to, among other things, the use of grazing and lighter feeding.
The bottom line is that this strategy can work, but to get the best balance you just have to milk hard
and feed well. As long as you know to the nearest cent what goes into the cows and what comes
out, you can steer well and achieve a high balance, Ron explains convincingly.

OmniGen

In order to further improve the results in the field of health and sustainability, Van Puijenbroek
started feeding OmniGen in 2016 on the advice of his feed supplier De Heus.
At that time, his cows cell counts were too high and there were too many cases of environmental
(e-coli) mastitis, which were difficult to cure. The cows resistance was just not up to scratch, in Ron's opinion. Within the first year of using OmniGen, we have overcome this. Our veterinary costs fell dramatically. Mastitis is no longer a significant challenge and e-coli mastitis is a thing of the past.

Also in the summer

Last year we grazed our cows, meaning less intensive feeding, therefore production sometimes
fluctuated, although, in previous years we averaged more than 35 liters per cow in the warm
summers and the cows had little trouble with the heat. In addition to the dairy cows, Ron is also very keen on the dry cows in the summer. Thanks to the OmniGen strategy, you can see our dry cows are eating better and have little stress during high heat days.
“In the summer I want easy milking, without having lots of mastitis problems. That works better for
my staff and myself and, above all, translates into less vet bills and extra milk”, Ron confirms.

Investing in health and convenience

To keep our business running smoothly, cows need to be healthy, I believe investing into the cows
health reaps overall benefits. We see OmniGen investment for each of our cows health, with lower
vet bills and better production, we can see the benefits of lower health challenges along with higher
production. “I am convinced our return on investment is being amply repaid.
Ron's advice to his fellow dairy farmers is therefore simple.
“Give it a year and you will see that enjoyable milking with fewer problems quickly yields
significantly more milk and balance!”
